Again I still don't think all of these scanners and tools are truely "dealer only". They are available to everyone it's just at a cost. People probably don't want to pay the extra money to get proper scanners to read the codes (and I can't really blame them). But honestly, if you aren't going to keep up with the technology and the times then you can't really complain.
Again, I don't have that great a knowledge on the topic, but it's my understanding that these scanners and tools are not dealer only tools. It's just the cost no one wants to pay.

A response from a post on another Forum
this has been a long... long... long... long... LOOOOONG battle for us mechanics for a long long, ok you get the point. we have been fighting forever to get the information from the manufactures. this isnt something new. the problem being now is that we have won SOME rights, in that we get SOME info, but not all of it. the sneaky way that they are doing it now is that they give us the info, but only the dealership scan tools will "talk" with the cars computer. and they dont sell the manufactures scan tools to independant shops, so that we are still locked out. so this is still an ongoing battle. another way they lock us out, is the diagnostics. ford is well known for this phrase :"replace with known good part and retest". a dealership has a whole lot full of "known good parts", but us indys dont have 20, 30, 80 cars sitting outside. fords not the only one that does that, and its becoming more and more popular.
It's happening this H.R. is a REAL Bill that's in congress. The Same Bill in N.Y, is A-6634

Just out of curiosity...what car manufaturers do you have the most trouble with? as Kyle pointed out the GM scanners are available to the general public...
I'm just wondering what companies we're talking about here. You mention Ford...any others?

Scanners: i made that point with a GM vehicle: GM bought AM General <-- Hummer
Bigkhans: I gotcha, and it's covered
Swartlkk: LMAO! I couldn't believe it either.... thats all the ppost was too
Isn't there a program you can get for a laptop that reads various codes with a few different vehicle-to-usb hook ups that can read most if not all makes?
For the cost of a dedicated laptop to run just that program and hook up to a printer AND the software you could buy a very nice scanner or 2, BUT with patches/updates that would pay for itself in the first year if you work around many exotic/specialty vehicles..
as an example
it is true that more specialized vehicles require more specialized tools. but if you are a shop of any size, and plan to service specialty vehicles, it is a necessary purchase. like only having standard sockets then complaining when you chew up the edges metric stuff on the hoda you are servicing...

well i saw just hondas so i didn't know if it was just them or others. alot of general scanners can scan a decent range of cars. i know the scanners i have up at school do pretty much all the cars but we have at least 7 different ones and 2 are for specific manufactures

Spectreblazer: what?! really...
Alex, correct me (harshly) if I am wrong, but weren't you addressing the OP what asking what scanners he was complaining about?
Spectre, are you now saying you agree that new cars are being held captive by their makers due to their inability to be easily scanned? Is that why you weighed in on that question? Or where you just answering anything you feel you can pop off on again?
TonyH: i, too, am interested in which cars and under what settings, you are having the most issues.
