How do TV shows know how many viewers they have?

It's all done by computers now. I'm pretty sure we have relatively live tracking for stats to see how many people are watching. I work for one of the largest cable providers in Atlantic Canada. Unfortunately I don't know much about the cable side. I deal only with telephone.
Digital cable has sort of changed the stat tracking though. Since digital cable is 2 way (ie you can send requests to the cable provider for stuff...in other words on demand) the stat tracking is a lot easier and relatively instant.

Yeah, I was just taking a blind guess there, but the rest of it is founded in some sort of reality. I have only heard one person I ever knew say "Oh, were a Neilsen House!" and I never pursued it any further. So, yeah I guess it would be a little weird to see some lab-coat / horn rimmed glasses wearin' statistician sitting on your sofa 24/7 lol!

Regards,

Thomas

Yeah, I had one of those boxes for about a month, got paranoid, sent it back. End of story. So, then they took away my TV Guide!

Thomas
