Im sooooooo!!! UG!
I have the exact opposite problem...
Family and friends always calling me up to "diagnose" car problems. Usually starts with, "My CEL is on!" I help the best I can but kind of hard to do over the phone and no codes.

it's in our nature, i guess.
I have as well.
Usually when a friend asks for my opinion they'll hear me out and do the simple 30 second test to rule that part out. I just finished going through a friend's snowmobile tonight that has no spark... Throttle monitor switch checked out fine, coil checked out fine, voltage regulator, CDI box checked out fine... hmmmm... Alright, unplug the harness at the stator and BOOM, the stator's gone and the engine isn't making any electricity
. I didn't have the tool to pull the stator coil off the crank so I sent him off to the dealer and told him to get them to change the stator, and not to get BS'd that it's something else. Also checked all of the grounds and they were fine. HOLY **** someone listened to me! lol. When you're getting a mechanice to work on your sled for ~80bucks hourly rate time is money, if you tell him what you want changed and they don't have to diagnose it takes alot less time and you save money in the end.
