For me getting an elk is something I cannot count on. Deer are more consistent for me. Then again I've gotten skunked some years and am thankful the the extra I got the year before to get me through the bad year. :-)
This year my elk hunting will be with a muzzle-loader. A bit more difficult to get close enough because of our Idaho regs that restrict the use of optical scopes on such guns. I don't mind as that regulation is true to the ML being a shorter range weapon. Besides, my ML, a side-lock, percussion cap .50 cal Kentucky rifle, is hell of a lot of fun to shoot!

This one was not very fast as it did not know I was less than 200 yards away for about 5-10 minutes. Then when I shot it, it took three steps from where I could have driven to it and dropped down a 60' embankment. LOL
