What was your friend's highest card in the flush behind the queen? He cannot count any pair in a flush as that kind of defeats calling the flush. Remember, you can only use the five best cards, assuming you are playing 7 stud or some version of 7 stud.
This would be really easy to tell you if you told us what each player had in their hands rather than "I had an eight and he had a pair of twos".
Just as an example, your hand has Q, J, 10, 8, 2 and the his hand is Q, J, 10, 7, 2 but has a pair of 2's, your hand wins. Pairs have no place in flushes.

see I knew i won the thing is these slow friends of mine dont know how to play and they think since we have a same flush that the next best hand wins.... not highest card... its like my hand was a 8 and 4 of hearts and he has a pair of 2's where one was heart. and the flush was 5,7,10,Q of hearts with my 8 of hearts and his 2 of hearts.
High card... never the "next best hand" lol. Always go to the high card in cases like that... a friend of mine both had Trip aces (2 on the table, 1 in our hand) but I had a K for a kicker and he only had a J... that being said my Kicker beat his. (This was Texas Hold'em)
