Arizona. Hey guys

Thought I would say hi. Moved over from the UK 3 months ago to get married to a wonderful lady from right here in Tucson. We own a 01 Blazer which she has had from new and so far have had to replace the ABS sensor and fuel pump. I replaced the fuel pump about 5 weeks ago after finding out how much a repair shop wanted, so far so good. I have had company cars for the last 9 years but before that I did all my own work but now have lots of catching up to do. We have just got a 00 Kia Sephia and I mean just got (4 days and counting) that I am working on. I love the Blazer, seems easy to work on, nice to drive but I have a question. Now it's a 4.3 V6 but it only throws out 190BHP. Why so little? I had a 06 2.0 diesel I4 Seat Leon in the UK (basically a Golf with a different body) that threw out 140BHP

The Blazer has over twice the engin size but only 50 extra BHP or am I missing something?
If I get any major problems I'll be sure to ask and being, albeit an older one, an auto electrican I'll help out if I can.

I think it's the fact the 4.3 has been in use FOREVER and hasn't changed all that much. The Blazer is by no means underpowered though, with 250ft/lbs of torque it'll get going good enough and the passing power on the highway is spot on.

The 4.3 is a very strong engine. It does have under 200 horses, but the 4.3 was built with torque in mind! As oktain mentioned, get on the pedal to pass someone and you will!!

Yep, because the Blazer is a somewhat heavier vehicle, the 262cid V6 is more about torque than higher RPM horsepower numbers. It takes torque to get mass rolling... horsepower to keep it there.
If you ever research truck engines, you will notice that the HP numbers are always lower than the same engine when in a car.

The major difference between the two engines is one is naturally aspirated running on gasoline and the other is direct injected, turbo charged, and running on diesel fuel. And that is before mentioning that one engine is using technology from 20+ years ago and the other is of much newer design. You guys get to play with the diesels a lot more than those of us in the US.

 

Thanks for the answers on the engine, I have done a bit of looking around and it seems that there are a lot of cars in the US with big engines (2.5 is seen as a big engine in the UK) don't seem to have the HP, speed or the MPG of cars in europe, even cars of the same make and model are different. Looks like I have lots to read and look up. Oh and just for some infomation I have found the specs on the Leon I had. Yes I know it is a diesel with a turbo but it was still only 1968cc

I had the 6 speed manual and it was clocked at 137mph and at 65 MPH I was getting 50MPG out of it and at 90 I was getting 35. If it sounds like I'm dissing US cars I'm not. I love the blazer and hope to keep it for many years to come ( I also love that I could run over a Smart car and not notice ) it's just so different over here and I need to change my way of thinking. Anyway I would not want to upset anyone on my first day here
