Hello All,

I just moved to PA in July from NJ, and just picked up a 1999 GMC JIMMY SLE. I actually traded my brother a sub woofer and a receiver for the truck. He was going to junk it as he got it for his son, but his son thought it was too ugly for him.

I personally like that it's 4x4 (albeit it needs to be fixed), has a moon roof, and has a tow package on it. Mileage is a bit more than I would have liked at 151,000 miles, but for the price I paid,I can't complain. I remember the 80's versions of these not being favorable with engines in my area.

I've been researching these vehicles the past few weeks since I decided to get it, and am looking to potentially restore it as much as possible. The downside of everything is that it was totally screwed with prior to my brother getting it, so there's issues with the 4x4 as above, the heat blows out all of the vents, the cruise control doesn't work, and the AC doesn't work properly. I know the 4x4 and the heat are most likely vacuum related from what I've read, and potentially the cruise control. I also see several recalls on the vehicle and was wondering if there were any other pointers I could use for it. The front end seems a little loose as well. And I am getting a little oil in the spark plug compartment on cylinder 5. So I'm replacing the valve covers, then doing a tune up.

These look like they can be done up pretty nice with extras like running boards, push guards, etc.

Jim

Welcome from northern Wyoming
Your nephews loss is your gain -Sadly its the typical spoiled a$$ed kid of the times today - If he was mine with a attitude like that it would be heal / toe express until he could buy something all on his own .....

Welcome! This is the place to keep your Jimmy on the road.

I have a link to my thread for when I replaced my vacuum lines when I had similar symptoms with my HVAC system.

There are many common issues with our Blazers but the only one that can cause you to lose the whole thing is if the lower intake manifold (LIM) gaskets fail. When this happens coolant is dumped into the lifter valley ruining the main bearings and the rest of the engine.

Some other common issues are:
  • Loose idler arm
  • Leaky remote oil filter lines
  • Worn front wheel hubs
  • Loose upper ball joints
  • Bad/dry-rotted vacuum hoses (as you have guessed)
  • Worn out fuel pump (never run it low!)
  • Sludge in cooling system because of mixing of Dexcool with the old style green coolant or too much air in the system with the old formulation Deccool.

Good Luck!
