Hi everyone, I own a 2000 GMC JIMMY SLE with 4x4 and about 226k miles. The truck is already lifted, not exactly sure how high up but it is lifted. I was wondering if anyone knew of some upgrades to make the car have decent off-road capabilities. The suspension is very squeaky so I know I have to look at that, and I need to get a transmission rebuild, but is there anything else you would change to make a 2000 jimmy more off-road worthy?
Thank you for you time.
First, make sure the suspension is in good shape. Better tires can improve off-road performance (sometimes at the expense of street manners). Better shocks might not make it more capable, but they'll make it more comfortable off-road. And if you don't already have good skid plates, I would look into those. If you don't already have some kind of locker or limited-slip rear differential, that can make a big difference, too.
If it's a daily driver, your going to want a descent pair of on/off road tires. Popular choices are Goodyear wrangler and bfg at3. Other then what you mentioned, it all depends on how rough your going offroading.
Ive had ats and mts ..i have mud tires now, its a little noisy but not bad. I second the good shocks they will help the ride. Keeping a good cv axle angle will insure youre not going through them alot
I have a 2001 ZR2 Blazer and with BFG AT3 tires I have driven on the dunes in the Oregon, over Elephant Hill and out of Bobby's Hole in Moab, On top of a mountain in the downpour on a Forrest service road that was slick and semi solid gumbo.
Good shocks are must keeps the tires on what you are trying to over over for grip if it's bouncing off you have much less traction. If you are just going on Forrest service roads and such to camp you should be ok but if you are doing more you probably wanted to set things up.
Also find out how much lift and what tires you have on it
I currently have on Nexen Radian htx tires size 31x10.5 R15. They’re on Chevy blazer wheels, not sure what year or anything but they are not the original Jimmy wheels.
