Default winch size

i have a 94 S10 2 door blazer. i want to get a winch i was thinking about just getting a 1500 pound one for cheap. im not planing on using it to get up rocks or over logs or anything. i live in alaska so its just nice to have something to get out of the snow with. anyone know if that would be enough to get out of a little ditch or some snow?

A small winch like that might struggle. Im not sure how much the first gen blazers weight but the 95+ weight around 5k lb's. Not to mention the force that it takes to move that 5K up and out of a snow bank. I would say if you really want to get out of snow banks and ditches in the winter, then go for a winch that wont have any problems. I would go for a 8000lb winch.

People say to buy a winch rated for 1.5 times your curb weight. So a 2nd gen would need a 6,000LB and a 1st gen would prob be ok with a 5500lb. These are the bare minimum I would use. You don't want the cable snapping or something along those lines.

Thats exactly what I had in mind, I would get something well rated over the minimum rating though. That could be horrible to snap a cable and someone get hurt.

well what i was thinking is the bigger cable. just swich it out so the winch will **** up before the cable breaks but i might go with the bigger one. i just have a 1500 pound one for a 4 wheeler it was 100 so i just decided to get it. might up grade soon. but what would happen if i got bigger cable?

The winch would probably stop pulling. If you get a long enough cable and a few ****** blocks, you can triple/quadruple the pulling force of the winch safely. That would be quite a pain to rig up every time you needed extracting though.
