$70 Paint Job

I'm going to paint my car, the Rustoleum way.

Today I picked up 4 Rustoleum primers and a galleon of Rustoleum flat black paint. I have to back to Honesdale to get some Mineral Spirtes and other supplies.

Today I'm painting the hood with primer. This is the 1st coat.

i will keep an eye on this one.....going for a "murdered" blazer huh? :)

RangerG 05-11-2011 03:50 PM

I'll hold my judgement until I see the final result lol.

TheRandom1 05-11-2011 05:27 PM

This should be interesting. I've seen some pretty good looking Rusto jobs, hopefully this one turns out well too!

CraigSnedeker 05-11-2011 06:45 PM

I'm just repainting it black.

lol, thanks

CraigSnedeker 05-12-2011 12:45 PM

Started on the tailgate. Also did a lot of wet sanding. It's pretty smooth so far.

i too have painted a car like this back in the day long ago, but i have to say for 100$ you could get a gallon of PPG primer almost any color and spray it that way too...

CraigSnedeker 05-12-2011 05:05 PM

Huh.. but I don't have an airbrush so that won't help.

Start of the black. Haven't water sanded it yet, once I do it'll look better.

I was honestly thinking of doing the same exact thing to my Jimmy. It's scratched to hell not only because it was a city truck, but because I have had too many idiots here (I go to college upstate) key it. I was actually thinking about painting the whole thing in bedliner paint, but I don't really like the black + the texture for this truck. I was thinking something dark metallic blue if I can find spray paint in that color at Walmart. I painted the door handles black with gloss Rustoleum and it looks fine, but I think that I can do better on the whole car. Are you doing this whole thing outside without a garage?

CraigSnedeker 05-12-2011 06:43 PM

Spray painting a car is really hard. I had a heck of a time getting an even coat of primer on the hood. And yes, I am. There's almost no wind so the air was really clean.

But good luck with your car!

01vortec 05-13-2011 01:29 AM

do you have an air compressor? Cheap HVLP guns are 20-30$ and will yield much better results than you're having. Plus, alot less wasted paint...

I really want that rear hatch spoiler.... I'm wondering if it will fit the non-fold down style hatch....

CraigSnedeker 05-13-2011 08:28 PM

Eh, maybe someday..

and yeah, it should. It fits on on the glass via double stick foam tape.

01vortec 05-13-2011 08:42 PM

is it factory or aftermarket? the only ones I'm finding say for 94 and older, thats the first gen s10 blazer..

cbr995 05-13-2011 09:01 PM

I really like the hatch spoiler on the GMC "Jimmy" Envoys. Too bad they don't work on 2 door Blazers because I would LOVE to have one on mine...

Anyways, I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

Came with the truth, prev. owners buy a junk load of stuff for it from Lund. I'd look there, It think they have them.

Actually I just checked out LUND and they don't seem to have them for the Blazer... they used to though. :/

Moores12345 05-14-2011 06:38 PM

I to have painted a full car outside with flat black spray paint. Not fun at all. Paint is wasted in the wind more times then not.

Hope it turns out well for you. I just painted my front and rear bumper, and bottom of the doors with bedliner and it turned out good with not much wind.

Thinking about doing my hood as well.

CraigSnedeker 05-14-2011 06:53 PM

Thanks :)

And I know, the wind (what little there was of it) took the spray paint into the sky. :/

BIG word.

I spent 120 bucks on paint color matched from a store by my house.

Flat black is so hard to do thats why 90 percent of decent cars that are flat black are vinyl. Sad thing is the paint on your truck was probably one of the only decent things about it.

diRteh 05-16-2011 12:27 AM

Keep hacking at it.. If your doin it to save money, think hard cuz you usually wind up nickle and diming yourself back to the point you would have been at is you brought a new spray gun or something..

I'm liking the z28 wheels too.. and yeah, Lund made a ton of stick/bolt ons back in the day.. I had a 98 that was weighted down with em..

The idea of a murdered out retro blazer is cool..

Have fun!! and more pics as you progress..

Thanks, I got them off eBay. And yeah, Lund doesn't sell most of those. I guess everytime a new car comes out, they sell some fancy parts for it. The previous owners went a little wild..

What exactly is a murdered blazer?

Gonna rain ALL week so no progress. :/

TheRandom1 05-16-2011 02:00 PM

"murdered" refers to being all blacked out, tinted windows, headlights, taillights, etc.

CraigSnedeker 05-16-2011 03:53 PM

Ah. I'd love to go for that, but I think having blacked out lights, the cops would be all to happy to pay be a visit. ;-)

And so far I removed all the chrome, so it's kind of murdered right now

Primer on the driver-side fender.

Some body work on the hood.

And I think my paint went bad. Rain, ftl.
http://i20.servimg.com/u/f20/16/50/19/15/100_1713.jpg

I think rain got into my can. The lid doesn't actually fit (fail).

I'm debating, when this is dry, just sanding it all off and go for gloss black. I like flat black, but I really want to go for that gloss black/red two tone.

Wet sanded with 400 grit. Once dry, I'll do 2 more coats of primer and wet sand with 600 grit.

ChevyBlazerChick 05-23-2011 08:34 PM

Hey, you're doing what I did lol. Rustoleum rocks! So far my paint has held up, and its been almost of year of it just sitting. The best thing about these paintjobs is if you come out from Wally World to see some Ignorant person let their cart scrape your truck... just whip out a spray can and fix! lol I wish I had pictures of my dad's truck now that its painted. He used Gloss Rustoleum and it turned out pretty good.

I went the Paint Gun way for my paint coats. My dad already had one for his K5 so I didn't have to buy anything but the paint.

CraigSnedeker 05-24-2011 07:48 AM

yeah, its pretty easy to fix!! and yours looks good!

Thanks!! My test vehicle was a Mustang that uh... my truck got angry and punched its left eye and nose in. lol. I went the lazy way on my truck and just sanded down to the original layer of Primer... and then painted lol. My theory was, "Eh, its a truck" lol.

You never know, you might start to like the crinkled paint look. lol ...maybe

CraigSnedeker 05-25-2011 02:25 PM

Progress due to nice weather.

In the morning I painted the bottom's of both sides. I had lost my masking tape, so I couldn't do near any windows

now out of curiosity what was the paint mix since 50/50 didnt work? and how are you doing the small inner body lines and what not?

CraigSnedeker 06-08-2011 03:20 PM

No it didn't work. What I do is poor small amounts of thinner into the paint until, when I take the paint stick out, it takes 3 seconds to start dripping. that works better.

and by body lines I assume that you mean where the body bumps out near the bottom. it's pretty easy actually

blazerguy22 06-11-2011 06:12 PM

and also the cracks in between the doors. anywhere the roller wont really reach? foam brush?

CraigSnedeker 06-12-2011 07:52 PM

So far the roller has reached everywhere. It's pretty small actually, not one you would want to paint a full wall with.

Paul-ish 06-13-2011 11:05 PM

WOW....errrr...yeah way to paint a car badly.

CraigSnedeker 06-14-2011 08:09 AM
