Bed liner as a paint job
Im considering using bed liner as a paint job i think it looks pretty tough.... they have roll on do it yourself kits.... i was wondering if anyone has tried this and if so how does it come out or should i just have a shop spray it on for me?:icon_playing:
|
I know there are some who have done the lower half of their truck with a roll on/spray on bedliner and it does'nt look half bad but I'm not sure how tacky it would look to do the entire truck. At least you'd never have to worry about waxing or scratches. :)
|
I did the roll on stuff (herculiner $75 per gallon) on my floor boards. Came out awesome, 2 cots and still a quart left over. No visible lines, because it is so thick and chunky. Painting the outside will be hard since it will run and needs to set up at 75 degrees for a good while. You shouldn't take it out for 2 days or so so it can cure fully.
It will look odd.... I have seen a samuri running around like that. TBH, you might want to look into rocker guard as a paint since it will be just as tough looking, and a LOT easier to keep looking right since some bedliners have a problem fading... Spray is going to cost you some $$$. You can go two-tone bed liner (on rockers) rocker guard on the rest and look wicked tough. Plus the bedliner comes in different colors, and the rocker guard is paint to match. :icon_shrug: just an option... http://www.herculiner.com/images/Onur_azeri_2_lg.jpg http://www.herculiner.com/images/test_lamar2_lg.jpg |
UGLY AS SIN!!!! The rockers are one thing and on certain vehicles it looks good, but the entire vehicle looks like crap.

It looks really good when it's a black vehicle with black roll on liner. Don't use the spray, you don't get any texture from it |

So all the pros that spray it on don't have texture? LOL
No pro jobs do have texture, they have a special machine that gives it its texture (probably witchcraft or something) http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...r/104_0371.jpg That's what non-pro spray liner looks like, there is some but not a whole bunch |
I've only seen one truck done top to bottom in it and it looks like crap. If it was trail rig only I might go for it but other wise no. The rockers look good and I've even seen a van with the roof done in it and that looked pretty good.
Pros can create the amount of texture it applies by adjusting the settings on the gun and the distance they shoot it from. You can spray the can from a bit further away and add texture to DIY parts. |
think about doing the bottom half, but i wouldn't go higher. keep it under the trim on the doors just my .02
|
I like the idea of black roll on up to the body line just above the plastic blazer tirm (complete rocker). I like the roof idea INSIDE the roof rack area. I like the idea of the whole front and read bumper (specifically step bumper in rear). I like the idea of the inside, and maybe ever a SMALL amount of interior trim.... (kick pannels and lower trim along doors on floor board). BUT only on an off-roading rig. top to bottom looks bad IMO.
A full sized 1st gen or K5 would be ideal for this kind of thing.:icon_twocents: |
They get texture by turning the pressure on the spray gun down. They start off the spray with high pressure. Then turn down the pressure and texturize by waving the spray gun like a garden hose back and fourth. I used to work at a truck accesories
shop in Edmonton. |

did my lower portion...totally happy with it..
more pics in album |
bed liner you say? is that the smooth stuff from the can then? also, that last chrome rocker trim on the bumper, is that from an S10 PU? lastly those are 31x10.5's on there? with only a shackle and t-bar? they fill up the front pretty well, but dont look very wide. I looked through the albums, but could you get a shot of the front tire at full turn? If all you did was +1.25 and +2 to pull off 31's... i'm game :icon_teeth:

In my opinion it looks horrible. I've seen vehicles done top to bottom with bed liner. The problem is just that... its "bed" liner, not paint. It wasn't originally designed for the exterior, therefore it doesn't look very appealing. The vehicles I've seen weren't daily drivers, just "beaters" used for off-roading or hunting.
The roll on stuff or even the store-bought spray on bed liner isn't as high quality as that which the Line-X or Rhino Lining guys use. Though, if you are on a budget and want to do it yourself, then you pretty much have to go with the store-bought stuff I guess. If you want a quality job that won't need a lot of upkeep, then go with the pros. If its just for a "beater" and not your daily driver then I'd say go with the store-bought stuff but for the best results with that I'd suggest stripping the paint to the metal so that it will be less likely to peel. That's just what I think. In the end, its obviously up to you. |

yes those are 31X10.5. only mods are what is on the list. the rockers bedliner is from a can...i am a cheap bastard. there is some texture to it, just slightly more than paint though. but for 40.00 bucks and some 300 grit - i cant complain. the tires do clear the fenders no cutting at all, but it is tight. i can get some pics to show how tight. as far as t-crank, the only setback i had was the cv boots slipped and spun lovely lube all over frame. easy enough to fix though. 2.00 for very large clamps and some new boot packs (lube) and clean up....i will take a pick of that too. the chrome trim on the lower portion was always there. it actually is the black rubber trim with the chrome strip you see on all blazers..check before pics....was gonna remove it but would also have to remove the rear corners, it is attached pretty good back there holes go right thru rear corners to hold it on...so there it stays... but overall very happy with work so far. |
awesome. i have the same side door trim, but have not seen it on the bumper that I can remember. if you would be so kid as to throw a shot of that rear bumper trim piece, and the 31's in the wheel well, I am quite interested in those 2 aspects of your truck.
Looking at it again, i like the look of the liner-in-a-can for rocker panels. I think the gritty stuff would look cheesey after a while, where as your job looks more like heavy duty rocker-guard than bed liner, toning it down some but still much tougher.... All in all I digs it. :D (i may just borrow that look instead of the roll-on rockers :icon_razz:) |
yeah, the liner i used was dupont (i think) from autozone 17.00 a quart. (be sure to shake can well to get sediments out)
two quarts was more than enough to do the job, i have four coats down where it is applied. i just used a good brush (bristles wont come out) the roller really didnt work for me. just be sure to have exacto blade handy when pulling masking off, just in case. |
one of my friends did it on his truck and it looks kinda tacky but each to their own i guess. if thats what you want to do i would do it.
|
thanks hubert. I think I will.
|
I'm still torn on whether or not to do my truck in bed liner. I've been toying with the idea. It's either that or flat black. I've got a long time to think about it though since I won't be in the market for a new paint job for a long time..
|
if you want flat black, go to maaco or earl scheib. for $200 the whole thing can be fflat black... glass and all!

my future projects include NOT doing that anytime soon :p
I'll post an update in my build tonight after i get a few shots of what i have accomplished. And Sisk: you will get used to it. think of the overspray as "tint". now you look even more bad ass :D |
sorry for hi-jacking....
ABN31B.....was looking at your album. noticed you have lower valance removed off front bumper. was that easy to do, and easy to put back if i dont like the look on my ride? thanks. ...did pics answer your questions? |
I saw this spray on bedliner on two aluminum fishing boats it covered the floor, up the inside walls and over the other side by 3 0r 4 inches. It looked great. Just remember -- its your money and you are the only one you gotta make happy.
|
:icon_ditto: amen brother :D
warthogdriver: yeah the pics were spot on. I appreciate you tossing them up for lil' ol' me :D As for the valance removal... well the previous owner gothimself a Street Scene Gen V SS Bumper Cover. Shortly after, he rearended a dude with a ball hitch and busted half the valance off. He ripped it off and chucked it. As far as I can tell, it is just pressure clipped on (like the impact strip) with maybe a bolt or 2 on the ends (tops) but i dont know. i have never dealt with it. I got this bumper off a blazer that had bruned from the bumper to the windshield. after chipping the slag and plastic off, i just undercoated over the wrecked chrome. best part, because i was burned up, it cost me $10 FTW! I really like the look of the front sans valance. it makes it look taller and a bit more rugged. BUT you will run into the same issue i had: oil filter shows and skid plate is too short.... it reminds me of chick jeans that dont go up enough to meet the bottom of the shirt, leaves a bit showing :p |
ABN31B,
no prob for the pics, glad to help...least i could do in return for all the info i have got off this forum..:icon_deal: thanks for the info on the valance, you certainly have interesting stories behind your blazer and parts you get....best i have is just going to the bone yard and pulling off what i want. i do like the sans valance look as well...just wanted to make sure i could change plans if i changed my mind. (haven't seen it person yet). |
it's not so much that my stories are all that interesting, it's just that i am an uncompromising cheap ass and have to find new and exciting ways to get my gear since i cant/dont pay for a lot of it :icon_hide: what i do pay for i wrestle every damn cent out of. infact all of the :icon_twocents: i collect around here will fund my new grille eventually... (except the Canadian Peanut gallery...)
well, between me and you.... i would go to a bone yard and just stomp the valance off one of their junkers... that way you can see how it comes off, and if you like the look... with no real skin off you back (unless you somehow fall :icon_really:) and you can score something else you may be needing/wanting while there :p |

heres how i did mine. i have a 96 blazer that came to me with the top half red and the bottom half like tan/gold. looked like crap. took some tape and masked the red and everything else i didnt want painted. scuffed the tan with 60 grit cuz you want a vary rough surface, sprayed down a very thin coat of flat black rattle can pait for a base then bought 2 quarts of that hurculiner stuff from wally world ans a roller (much cheaper that way, trust me) then rolled it all on. took me a while and it smells aweful. wear something you dont care about cuz that **** gets EVERYWHERE. i was peelin off rubber chunks for a week! not sure how to upload pics but if you got to my albums you can see it there. hope it helped
|
Saw a Wrangler painted like that and it didn't look bad from a distance but up close it looked absolutely horrible
|
yeah, thats the problem with the bedliner paint. if you use the gritty stuff, it looks awesome on the trail and when it's not your rig and you see it from some distance.
as soon as you get close, it's rough on the eyes.... That's why i liked the spray on look warthogdriver got. (rattle can, not spray gun BTW) |
actually i used the 17.00 a can dupont stuff at autozone....just not much texture in it. plus i only brushed it on . roller really didnt work on the curved surfaces to well.

Bedlined Rockers

I know this is an older post, but if you want to see what it looks like when Line-X'd, I thought I would assist. Yes it was costly, but I like the way it looks, and my Blaze does a lot of offroad driving... Hope this helps you decide which route to take.
|
looks good.

hello for those of you that have access to srpay equip. and commpresser UPOL makes a spray on bedliner it is called RAPTOR that can be applied with a 2.1 size orfice spraygun it comes in several colors and a tintable one that you can make almost any color you can also reduce it down to remove some of the textuer it has a semi gloss sheen to it so dont expect a show car shine. thanks and good luck

Why didn't you do the front bumper too? Looks incomplete the way it is.
