My 1999 Jimmy has the type of rear hatch that allows the back glass to open upward or the whole entire hatch can open upward.
Then there are 2nd generation Blazers I have seenthat have the glass open upward and the tail gate open downward like the 1st generation Blazers.
Seems the Blazer type would be more convenient and stronger so what was the reason for offering 2 types of rear hatches?

I have the tailgate (glass up, gate down) and I like it. I think both the tailgate or liftgate were available on the Jimmy's as well. IIRC, the liftgate like yours was standard and the tailgate was optional.
