Default Uncommon shift

Every time I go to design a custom center console for my '99 Jimmy, the thing that always throws me is the floor shifter (automatic transmission). I have seen where some '95-97 Jimmy's and Blazers have column shifters, but I can't find any articles online about going from floor to column. There are plenty about going from column to floor and the ones I have read simply suggest removing the cable and shift arm from the column, not the mechanism attached the the column. So I am wondering how hard it would be to add a column shifter to my '99? Is it as simple as getting the shift mechanism for a '95-97 and attaching it to the column or will I need to seek out a full steering column from a '95-97?
