what will runnin 89 do

a mechanic told me that you should run higher octane gas so your cat wont work as hard and run thru the car cleaner and last longer. and maybe mpgs

NECRO-THREAD!! HA! You do realize this thread is over a year old...
Hope that mechanic is a good wrench turner because he doesn't understand the theory & operation of an internal combustion engine and it's control systems if that is what he thinks on the matter.

Catalytic Converter doesnt work as hard cuz gas is more cleaner

If your engine is designed to run with a particular octane fuel, using a higher octane fuel will not have any affect besides lightening your wallet. Any affect on the catalytic converter will be indistinguishable.
The topic of higher octane fuels has been discussed before and a search will turn up those posts. If you are getting a more complete burn using higher octane fuel than what the manufacturer recommends, then there are other contributing factors in your engine that is causing it to operate outside of its design parameters.

well a lighter wallet is weight saving which could equal a minuscule performance boost lol
beyond that if your running a car designed for premium and run reg. unleaded than thats not cool, if your running a very high perf motor and not using premium or higher octane in general than thats bad too, with our trucks its not needed unless your PCM/ECU is tuned for that type of fuel

My mechanic said that you have to run a few tanks of premium for the pcm to learn that your using higher octane fuel. I seem to get a little better gas mileage. Correct me if I'm wrong Kyle. Which you kind of already answered that. But what do you think about the pcm relearning about the higher octane?

It will adjust, but you have to look at it objectively. You have to compare the cost per mile for each different octane after running it for at least 2 tank fulls before doing the comparison. You also have to make sure that while you are doing the comparisons you keep your route and habits approximately the same.
