Default 1st gen 4x4 question

Since I took out my dash cluster and repaired the power supply, I have noticed that my 4hi will come on randomly. It did not do this prior to removing and fixing the dash.
I am not sure if the 4wd is actually engaging when this happens, since I live in a city and when the 4hi light comes on, there is nowhere for me to test it out, or if just the light on the switch is coming on. When I push the button the light turns off.
I have, however since ive noticed it come on randomly, pushed the 4hi button when its not on and I can hear 4wheel engaging.

What could be the cause of this?
