Yes i had the plug out, and it was low, very hard to read level, but stuck a wire in to try to smell oil and feel out level, seemed at least two inchs down from fill plug. However i dont see any leak marks around yokes or tc itself? Would changing fluid help? if i did that and didnt help can i drain that fluid and use it in my new one or is fluid ruined then? thank you, chuck

It would be something worth trying. You'll need two quarts of Autotrak II fluid to fill the transfer case. Hopefully it works. 2" low is bad though...

I would not reuse the fluid if it doesn't work.

Im new to the fourm guys but I have an 03 and just had the 4wd fixed. Originally thought only the shift cable from under the battery to the TC was bad, caused by an old battery leaking, but ended up having to replace a gear in the front differential too because the system wasn't engaging fully and sheared off the edge of the gear. From talking to a couple guys who specialize in 4wd, the not fully engaging is fairly common and its worth your while to check the front differential gears if your having 4wd problems.

How were u able to check the differential? all ive learned is that there is no pumpkin to pull, just a fill plug. Anything else i would have to tear the diff apart? just wonder if thats how you did it. I actually have my tc out now, just got it pulled, putting the new (used) one in tommorrow, and the fluid smells horrific, very burnt. Im crossing my fingers this is it, feel i have checked everything else very thouroughly. We will find out tommorrow.
