3 button 4x4 with no lights on
OK so i searched and searched and maybe i am just searching for the wrong things. And since i bought this truck with the 4wd not working i need someone to start me in the right direction.
I have the 3 button panel and there are no lights or sounds when i press anything.
Is the 2hi button supposed to be lit up while its in 2wd? if so mine aint.
When i press 4hi or 4lo there are no sounds no lights nothing.
Should i try replacing that switch or can there be no lights on that panel because of another faulty piece? money is tight so i need to do this as cheap as possible.
Thanks in advance...
and for you vets.... i did search already!

Well to start, you haven't posted any information about your vehicle, which makes troubleshooting very hard. I'm going to go ahead and assume you have a 2nd gen Blazer...
If so, its a very, very, very common problem with these trucks. It could be an issue with the TCCM. If I'm not mistaken usually when you have no lights whatsoever on the buttons it means there is an issue with the TCCM (at least with my truck that was the case).
Start by browsing through this thread: https://blazerforum.com/forum/tech-articles-diy-29/4x4-no-worky-maybe-will-help-7180/
There is TONS of info in there that should help with your problems.
A quick way to check your TCCM is to disconnect your battery cables and touch them together for 5 seconds. This resets the TCCM. If that doesn't work check the connectors for the TCCM. They are common for corroding. It's located in the passenger side footwell behind the kick panel.
PS - a tip...post your vehicle info in your sig. It helps us with troubleshooting

Fuse? Have you checked them (not just looking at them, but actually checking their continuity)?
Have you tried to pull codes (OBD2 Non-Automatic Transfer Case Diagnostics)? If so, what was the outcome?
THIS THREAD has the wiring diagrams for the 2nd gen NV233 transfer case.

wow! thanks for such quick and informative replies guys! i will go do the battery thing and check connectors and fuses now. i am headed to autozone later on so i will have them check for codes. (assuming those are the codes you are talking about)

*UPDATE*
ok so after wondering all these things and reading all these posts about how to check the codes stored in the NV233 TCCM i finally figured out why the buttons arent lighting up.
i pulled off the part of the dash that contains the two a/c vents and the 4x4 buttons only to find out that it isnt hooked up. the harness that plugs in the back is disconnected and has fell down into the dash.
i see there are two screws over the gauges to take out. then how do i pull the dash off? i keep getting wedged against the steering column. do i need to remove the plastic around the column?
i am hoping that is all it will take to get my 4wd working! *crosses fingers* if not at least i can start to narrow it down to see what it actually is.
once again thanks for everyones quick replies in helping me get this thing working. all these hills here in TN are waiting for me!!!

so i pulled off the dashboard and took out the radio and ac controls and i can not find the harness that plugs into the back of the buttons for 4wd. dont they run from the kick panel or glove box area to that area? i cant find anything!!! i even broke some of that plastic thats behind the radio out to try to find the wires and cant find diddily squat!$@%#$#
where is that harness located so that i can get it plugged in?
SOMEONE HELP!!!

ok i feel like an IDIOT!!!
I just walked back out there and the harness was tucked up above that area where the buttons are.
one of the bulbs was blown on the switch so i replaced the bulb and all the lights do work now.
when i press 4hi i hear something engaging and the 4hi button lights up but i went out in the road and did a burnout with the rear wheels only so obviously the front wheels arent locked in. i put it in neutral and hit 4lo and it lights up and it shifts into low range but still no front wheels pulling.
so now i am guessing its a vacuum actuator.
at least now i can start narrowing it down to find the real problem.
what should i check first?
