Default 4x4 Info

Hi, first off, let me say I have never owned a 4x4 vehicle. Just a front wheel drive Oldsmobile 88 and a Dodge Caravan. I was wondering about the transfer case in my '99 LT, it's the push button Auto-trac auto transfer case and I was wondering what should I do to maintain it? I mean, it has fluid in it I would imagine, so should that or the trans fluid be changed at a certain interval? (I was told with my Dodge that the trans fluid should not be changed if it has been in it most of its life, which seemed wrong to me it had 100k on it) I noticed it seems to take a long time to shift into 4 Hi in the winter sometimes, but it was in reverse when I pushed the button, does that hurt it? Sorry for the questions, I think this is the right section for this post, I want to know more about the 4x4 system and how it works so I don't hurt it next winter
Thanks!
Jayson
