Not everything is engaging properly if you do not have power to the front axle at all times. When your transfer case locks into 4wd, the front and rear driveshafts are locked together. So you either have a problem in the transfer case or in the engagement of the front axle.

OK got the front wheel drive situated and working but now in sticky situations I only get one front one rear ... fixes both expensive and cheap??

You dont have a locker or limited slips in the axles, you get one wheel, which is the wheel with the least amount of traction

This. Throw a locker in the rear. Don't even think about adding one up front unless your ride is 95% used off road. Some research will let you know the differences in all the lockers out there along with the differences from a limited slip diff.
