hey, im new here and was hoping i could get an answer for this weird noise i've been hearing.
Just recently(about a week ago) I bought a 1988 chevy blazer, 2dr, with 4.3L, auto tranny, 4x4 with manual shift control. Has 238,000 km's, which are mostly highway. Hope this helps for info. Also has stock tires.
Anyway, i've been using 2wd for sometime, until it started getting really icy and lots of snow. So i switched it to 4x4. After i switched it over to 4x4 and it had locked, i noticed that it made a whining noise after you stepped on the gas. When you let off the gas, the noise becomes really unnoticeable and practically dissappears. The more gas you give it the louder the noise becomes. usually is heard when going over 30km/h +.
I tried switching it back to 2wd and then putting it back into 4x4 but it still makes the same nosie after being put into 4x4. I just woundering what would cause this? I was thinking maybe its because its so cold outside and that the diff fluid doesnt have a chnave to warm up and lubricate properly? Or maybe something needs greased like a bearing? The noise also seems like its coming from the passengers side. Hope this helps some.
I'm just worried that this isnt a major problem. Its a good truck in excellent shape, and i want her to last for a few for winter years since its my winter ride.
Thanks, rob

I had a noise like that, turned out to be a bad bearing. Check the fron bearings on the vehicle.
Chack the car up, grab wheel at 9:00 and 6:00. Shake wheel bck and forth towards you noting amount of play. Do same with hands at 12:00 and 6:00. Excessive play is usually a bad bearing. Can be changed yourself with borrowed tools from autozone. Not a good job for outdoors in winter. Took me about 3-4 hrs total with all the screwing around, and trips to the autoparts store for the correct tools.
