Default 4x4 Woes...possible to temporarily disable the 4WD system?

For the last six months, I've been chasing down an issue on my 2000 Blazer, where my 4WD tries to partially engage while driving. It makes a terrible sound that resembles a single-prop airplane trying to take off. If I put it in 4HI, the sound goes away. I replaced the actuator cable, but the sound has persisted intermittently of some time. I thought I had exorcised it a few months back, by changing the fluid in the T-Case (it was low), but the sound came back. As of yesterday, it's doing it near constantly, so I took it into a local garage. I'm not sure that I'll have the money to fix whatever it is they find, so I'm wondering...can the 4x4 be disabled somehow? What would need to be removed - front driveshaft, CV axles, diff, all of it? Can any of it be removed without things leaking? This would be temporary, until I could fix/replace whatever the issue is.

Just weighing my options at this point.

Electronic.

Although it's maybe moot point now...I took it into the shop and the t-case is toast. But, I can get a used one for $150. So I'm going that route for now until I can maybe do a rebuild on the old case.
