Default Broken part for speedometer?

First off, I'm not sure if this belongs here, or in eng/trans area. If it goes there, feel free to move it.

Now, on to business at hand. Picked up a new speedometer cable for the K5 today, previous owner had cut the old one. Installed it, still no speed is showing on the gauge. There is however a couple questions I have. What is the first picture. one side connects to transfer case (red circle) other side connects to speedometer cable (green circle). What is this little part?

Second picture is of a small piece that goes in the transfer case side to turn a gear inside this little part. it appears to have broken off, thus rendering everything useless.

Any advice/help/assistance is appreciated as always guys.

im guessing this is off a np203 transfercase? thats the only place i ever seen those things. not really sure about the first one, i think it has something to do with like the gear ratio or whatever. its like a gear reduction box to spin the speedometer the correct speed (someone correct me if im wrong)

and the second piece just looks like the gear that that the transfercase spins to the spin the cable.

also make sure your speedocable is good too. you can spin it by hand really quick and have someone sit in the cab to see if the needle twitches. or put a drill on it to be sure

speedo cable is good, its brand new. if i hook the cable up straight to the transfer case, i can hear it spinning when i move the truck. when I first take off that way (cable connected straight to transfer case) the speedo pegs out, and then I just hear the cable spinning out.

I would assume your correct, that its a gear reducer to make the speedometer work properly. any idea what its called or where I might buy one? or how to tell what model transfer case I have?

Usually there is a plate on the backside that tells you. Your truck will have either a np203 np205 or np208. You can try googling those and see which one looks like yours. Or post a picture. If its a massive cast iron fullsize one it will Be the 203

And I have no idea on the name or where to get one. A while back I went to the junkyard and got one for a guy in belgum years ago and actually found one. Mayyyyybe a dealer will have one. Or check ebay or lmc.

I have a 203 tailshaft in my garage but pretty sure that part is more on the body

This is what the speedo output from the NP203 transfer case looks like:

And here is the gear from inside the transfer case along with the fitting that holds it in and that the speedo cable threads onto:

From the looks of it, you have a ratio conversion box in the first picture and then the second picture looks like it is possibly the same as what I show above. The driven gear from inside the transfer case should have a square hole in the outside end of it.

that is pretty much exactly what I'm looking at on the transfer case. except the connection is top right (upper, passenger side). looks like the NP203 is bottom left. I'll have to crawl under it and take some pictures of what it actually looks like.

and that gear reducer looks to be what is broken on mine. Time to start hitting up junkyards

Probably is the same and the rear cover is just rotated 180*.
