Default CV Boot Problem

Hey guys. I've been having a problem keeing my left CV boot clamp on my CV. it keeps fallig off and I dont know why. it slips over the lip and hangs on the front axle. I've put it back on several times already and by looking at the right side it looks like the left boot is stiffer or sumething. it doesnt want to flex when the suspension it relaxed or compressed. I tryed to put anorth clamp on it but it wouldnt go tight enough. When I put the clamp back on it stays on for a good while but sooner or later it just slides to the center again.. sometimes ill drive all highway and others i may go hit a trail or something but is never the same driving style that makes it fall off.If anyones ever had the problem or knows how I maybe ableto stop this please let me know. I want to get it sealed up before its to late and i trash the whole CV. thnks.

I thought those clamps were put on by crimping them? Once they were off I thought they had to be re-crimped.

I personally never reused CV boot clamps once they were used, you can get a new clamp and try it again, just got to make sure its tight, if its on there right it wont slip off.

I just used a pair of needle nose and a screwdriver and it goes back on with a little elbow grease too. I just cant get a new clamp to get tight enough because the boot is too stiff to flex up where it needs to be to get the clamp on tight. It stays at a low angle and wont bend much. I thought those boots were supposed to be flexible. My angles are not bad so I know its not strectchingit too much. Im just stumped on why it keeps comeing off at odd times. If I get a screw type clamp do you think that would hold any better?

You could have tolerances building up in the front end parts, ball joint looseness along with wheel bearing wear etc. and if it all comes together at the correct angle then the boot comes off. Although you state that you put the clamp back on it is probably not completely in the small "groove" area where the boot is supposed to sit with theclamp on tight. I have helped to install new boots and grease on some import style CV's and you have to get the clamp tight by pulling it and bending it back over on its self then using the small tabs to bend over and hold the clamp in place...so just getting the clamp back in place by sliding it back will only work for a short time. You need to remove the shaft and replace the boot and grease.

Plus with the T-Bar crank and the 1" spacers you may be side loading the axle shaft so that even a moderate amout of control arm travel stretches the boot past its normal operating range...

My spacers and crank aren't effecting the pitch. my Z-heights are well within the factory settings. I've had to go to long lengths finding the front end lengths and heights due to the special suspesion set-up (Z71). By measureing the components. its almost like someone build my blazer from scratch. its got 1500 silverado steering parts. and zr2 length upper arms.( I know thisfrom having to replace the idler arm. the bolt holes didnt match up for a blazerone. its 1/4 in off. Had to measure and get one for a 893500.) Its not butched up or anything. Its all factoey stuff.it actually runs and drives VERY good and has excellant control with NO steering slop or bad camber angles. its all in check. (surprising due to the 130k miles ) It doesnt sit as high as zr2 but the components are set upfor that height. Its just got me very confused because I just cant figure out why this is slipping off all the time.Im almost to the point were im gonna replace it with a straight axle if it doesnt stay on with a new boot. then its gonna get a 9in lift! thanks guys. Im just gonna get a new boot and replace it. it flexes alot more than the one on it now.

Did you buy this new or used. If used it might be that the previous owner replaced thataxle with a standard S10 not nowing that there might be a difference. You should check the part numbers for a Silverado and a standard S10 and a ZR2, even check measurments for the axle lengths...if GM did make an "unofficial" Z71 option there might not be a lot of them out there and the parts lists for most mechanics may not list it so someone just put in something that was the closest that they could get to to fix the part...

That is just an optional opinion...

I bought it used and in excellant shape but the axle itself is a Zr2 part number and the lengths i measured confirm it. and I know there arent very many. I saw ONE online a few weeks ago but i cant find the website any longer. That straight axle conversion's looking that much easier everyday. Opinions are god . I've run out of ideas on this part.
