Theres no procedure, torque specs or sequence in the original GM Unit Repair Manual. Im lookng at it now.
The most important points are:
Drain ALL the oil out so it doesnt run down on the sealing surfaces and cause a leak,
Lay the cover on a FLAT SURFACE and correct for warping!! If the screw holes are pulled in, flatten them with a small hammer and some sort of flat block,
Clean all the threads and use low strength Loctite to lock the screws,
Cross tighten FINGER TIGHT up to low torque, maybe 10 ft. lb. All the screws are doing is holding the cover on, no torque is neded. Cross tighten in both vertical and horizontal directions, dont tighten enough to distort the cover,
RTV sealant, thick bead around the perimeter on CLEAN SURFACES WITH NO OIL, and around the screw holes, tighten just enough to flatten the RTV out uniformly around the cover,
Let the RTV CURE 24 HOURS so the gear oil doesnt erode it.
