Default Front 4x4 suspension

Ok I know the '97 Bravada has no front springs per say as far as coil or leaf, but is there some other system on the frontend that performs this function or do the shocks just take the brunt?

The front of all 4wd & awd s-series vehicles is a torsion bar setup. The bar runs from the lower control arm back to a cross member. The resistance to twisting is what gives the front end the spring rate necessary.

Is this something that commonly needs replacing in late '90's models and if so at what mileage?

Unless you are having problems with the front end sagging and cannot correct it by tightening the torsion jack bolt, you don't have to worry about replacing them.
