Default Grinding noise coming from Transfer Case

Hi, new to the forum, Got a 1996 Blazer LS 4wd from a co-worker for nuttin. When the car starts it idles but theres a loud grinding metal against metal almost like a really bad rod knock coming from the transfer case. Also when the car revs up on its own from 1k rpm to around 1.5k rpm and the speedometer goes to 5mph. After asking some people at work it seems like its stuck inbetween 2wd and 4wd and also when you put it in gear doesnt want to stay running. Thanx in advance for the help
