Unhappy Need help 4x4

i own a 2000 chevy blazer LT 4wd and my 4x4 doesn't work, people are saying replace the switch because my button switch doesn't illuminate but when it did my 4x4 never really worked to begin with, always stuck with the "service 4wd" light and when it was off, like once in a blue moon my 4x4 will work.. i'm not big into chevys but can anyone help me out?

if you take the battery off and look underneath it, you'll see a cable attached to a suction cup type deal. the cable end leads to your trannsfer case and the vacuum tube on the other end leads elsewhere. consider lubing the cable or making sure you have a good seal. I had a similar problem with my '01 and that fixed it.
