That's a modified "home made" unit in my opinion. I have never seen one like that on any vehicle. I would search a scrap yard for a stock one, and replace it. Would be my first step.

and you have a nice looking blazer. Love the side steps, they look custom as well.

Welcome to the forum.

It looks like the unit has been damaged. Try to figure out how it is supposed to work, The spring to me seems as it should act against that spacer.
The solution may be that simple.

There is also a thread on how to make it a manual actuator for less then 30$ in parts... maybe so a search for it and see if that could be an option for you.

Not really. It simply makes you use it manually, so you could simply forget to activate the front axle in 4x4. Not sure what could happen when riding it in 4LO. The torque will be directed all to the rear wheels.

I would try and see if you can engage it properly with the actual rigging. It that is working a repari with a new spring may be an easy fix.
Else you could look for the OEM parts at a scrapyard and bring it back to stock, but I guess there has been a reason why somebody fixed it that way.
Might have been he wasn't able to find the correct parts. Have a look at rockauto.com, they may even have all the stuff.
