Default Popping in the Front end?

Okay ive searched and searched and have multiple ideas. I get a pretty solid popping noise mainly only when I am backing up and turning at the same time. Ive seen it could be control arm or a number of other things. I tested it with a buddy by driving it backwards while stabbing the breaks and the whole drivers side wheel kicked in at the top and out at the bottom. Had to drive it home and intermittently would lose braking power. from what i under stand it sounds like i need to replace a control arm. My problem is though that when i went to take the wheel off to have a look i noticed one of the studs was snapped off with no lug nut. I just got the vehicle a few weeks back and hadnt really looked much as it came from a good friend. Could this missing stud have caused my problem? Nothing on the control arm leads me to believe its bad. All the rubber looks good from what i can tell. The stud has some rust and all around it so im thinking its probably been broken for awhile. This is on a 2001 GMC Jimmy but yall seem crazy good with Blazers so im hoping yall can help me out. Thanks in advance for any help.
