Default Removing rear U-joints

Over some time there has developed a clunk in my rear drive shaft when putting the trans in drive from park, and going from reverse to drive and drive to reverse. Thought I should grease up my u-joints, but couldn't find a grease nipple. Therefore I want to change them to some aftermarket ones with grease nipples. I unbolted the four bolts on the rear yoke, but the u-joint wouldn't let go. I see that some people on this forum use heat, is this the way to go or will it let go from the yoke if I give it some force?

And one more thing, do these differentials have the same break bolt as my 84 k5?

I just used a large flathead screwdriver to pop it free of the yoke after tapping it with a hammer.

It should come off pretty easily with a little work. Have you tried WD40? I've never tried WD40 personally, but I would think that if it's stuck bad enough, that would help.

once you unbolt the 4 bolts and pop off the retaining clips pry the drive shaft off the yoke with a tire iron or big heavy prybar, the heat you need is to get the neoprene out of the little holes in the drive shaft end to get the joints out

X2

Works every time and you won't have to worry about it with the new u-joint if you ever have a problem with it again.

Make sure the tranny is in neutral and the parking brake is on. Stick a prybar in there and it will pop right off the yoke.
What do you mean by "break bolt"? If your referring to the crush sleeve on the pinion then the answer is yes.

My K5 has a bolt in the rear/front diff that from time to time needs to be changed. In norway this is called a break bolt. But I do not think that is the correct name for it.

And thanks for the information on the u-joints

One more question. Is it correct that tha blazer s10 uses the same u-joints as the 1984 k5? On rockauto.com they list that it is the same u-joints for all chevys from 1971-200x

There is no bolt in any differential that needs to be changed with any normal maintenance or frequency.
As far as the u-joints being the same... it is probable.
