Replacing Pitman arm and Idler arm

Default Replacing Pitman arm and Idler arm

Anyone on here Replace Pitman arm and Idler arm? I have looked at it. Is it relatively easy to remove the dler arm if I only have the truck on Jack stands or do you really need a lift to get at part of it?

Also on the Pitman arm do I realy need to remove the steering gear? I was told if I am doing an alignment after I dont realy need to remove the steering gear and can just remove the arm from the steering.

If you have a impact it will make it way easier. You can leave all the lines and steering shaft bolted to the box you just have to unbolt it from the frame and twist it so you can get at the bolt then you need a pitman arm puller. But without a impact I don't think its gonna happen.

I have all the air tools (Impact) so that is not a concern. But I have never replace a pitman or Idler arm. (Done the ball joints and tierods).

So if I unbold the box I should be able to twist it to get in there with the impact?

appears to me for the Idler arm where the it is bolted to the frame there are two bolts, it doesnt look like I can get in there with the impact can I?? Or will a short bar work???

Bigest concern is can this be done lying on my back as the higest I can get the truck off the ground is about 18 inches with my 6 ton jack stands.

Yeah the idler has holes on the outside of the frame so you can get a socket in there

If worse comes to worse you will have to remove the gearbox if the puller won't take it off. Happened to me once
