i know this has been hashed and rehashed, but i can't seem to find a thread that meets my issues...
we have a roar with a definite rhythm to it at about 30-40 mph. we had it up on stands last week and thought we had tracked it to a dragging brake (replaced calipers and pads- needed them anyway) but the noise is still there. my original thought was a CV joint because i had seen grease leaking from the boot while doing a lube job. when it was on stands it seemed to be coming from the rear, but i can't nail down which side.
thoughts? U-joints don't seem to have any play in them, but the drivers side seems to have a little play in the wheel bearing, but not on the left. could that bearing be causing this kind of roar?
thanx

Iv have the same thing for a year now. i have chaged all the brake parts + hubs i still get the noise. I do have my cv boots broken so theres bearly any grease in there and they must be shot out of balance is what am thinking the noise is comeing from or where the cv connects to in the center those are the only two last things on the to do list for the truck, it just seems every time i fix something something else breaks.

apparently no one else has found a solution to this problem in the 14 months since I first posted the original post I forgot about...meanwhile there have been changes in the problem.
thanks for correcting my errant placing of a second post for a problem yet unsolved!

Hi Saxman,
I had a problem with a roar over 30mph about 2 years ago. First a bit of history. I have had the car for about 8 years and replaced ball joints, tie-rod ends, idler arm, front and rear bearings, brakes, ball joints, ball joints and ball joints. When the roar started I first thought it was my tires which were brand new at the time. I added some air and it remained. I pulled the front wheels off and checked everything and it all seemed fine. I pulled the rear wheels off and checked everything and it all seemed fine. After about a year it got so loud that I wound up wearing ear protection while driving and started looking for a new car. Mileage was unaffected, braking performance was unaffected, and I could not tell where it was coming from. Inside the car it sounded like the rear end and outside it sounded like the front end. In a last ditch effort to find the problem I put all 4 wheels in the air and had someone run it up to 60mph while I poked around with a stethoscope. Quite a scary operation, let me tell you. I can not remember which side it was, but when probing one of the front knuckles it practically blew my ear drums out. Sure enough it was a bad bearing. Almost no detectable play with all the brake hardware removed. I would guess that there was no more than 5 thousandths of up and down play in the bearing, but holy moly it was making a lot of noise. I have seen bearings with a lot more play than 5 thousandths and did not make nearly that much noise. I never did beat it apart to see what happened to the actual bearing, but after I replaced it the noise was gone. I would say that if you have a detectable amount of play in either of your front bearings, replace it. It may also be the source of your noise.

Thanks for taking time to reply...sounds very similar to my issue. I'm going to use a scope tomorrow to see if I can decide which one it is.

well......considering you've been a member since October 2009, and have only posted 4 times (1 of which was for a double thread post) i can't see how you can even begin to critisize the forum or it's members.
if you really wanted to fix our issue-and not leave it unaddressed for 14 months-you should've brought this thread to everyones attention again after a few days, by simply asking for help again.
