State inspection
#1
Hey guyz, i have a problem and little mad. i went to take my truck into a chevy dealer to get my safety/ state inspection since i just moved to richmond, va. this is what they told me.front left wheel bearing hub assy.($421.16), right lower ball joint($109.26), idler arm(not even a year old,$111.22), and pitman arm(104.21) is bad. all this plus alingment and labor will cost me $1392.08. i said, yall must be out of ur mind f**king mind, most of these parts cost about half as much that u are pricing them out for. so here is the thing, i have 2 weeks to get all of this fixed and reinspected. i can get most of the parts on by myself (wheel bearing might be hard since i dont have a big socket to fit the cv nut) but before i tear into my truck, is there a way i can check to see if these parts are actually bad?

no place you can get a second opinion?? would be easiest..does sound like you are being taken for a ride on that one....love that dealership pricing scale.

yeah, i was going for it until he told me the prices. i know the most of these parts dont even cost $100 and the wheel bearing can be picked up for $94.95(synergy offroad)-$154..(for the high dollar one at advanced). i might go take it to a reg shop for i'm short on time and i need to get this done on top of changing my oil and spark plugs/wire/cab&rotor

alot of autopart places will loan you tools, like the socket you need for the axle nut

Here in Texas, we have state inspections as well...they are nothing but a cash-cow. Easy revenue for the state, and a bump to business as a mechanic will usually tell you there is something that needs to be fixed to pass inspection...until you befriend an honest local shop.

breaking the law isnt what i had in mind here. i just wanna know how i can check the parts to make sure they are truly bad then get the parts and put them on so i can get inspected and not get hassled every other day by the popo.

i would get a second opinion for sure. you can check your ball joints for movement and you hub also. when they tell you what is bad say " would you mind showing me". that way you can see it for your self. most of the shops here will show you what the problem is.

you can jack the car up and grab the tire and move it side to side and up and down and see if theres any excessive play. also have the truck running and tires on the ground and have someone move the steering wheel back and forth and check out the steering, you will see if the idler arm is bad.
if your mechanically inclined just replace all this crap yourself. the wheel bearing is pretty easy except for that big socket (which costs $25) then its 3 bolts on the back. im glad we dont have state inspections here. idler arm is two bolts. the lower ball joint might be a bit of work, but i have never done one on a s10 yet
