if your mechanically inclined just replace all this crap yourself. the wheel bearing is pretty easy except for that big socket (which costs $25) then its 3 bolts on the back. im glad we dont have state inspections here. idler arm is two bolts. the lower ball joint might be a bit of work, but i have never done one on a s10 yet
I picked up that socket for $5 at a pawn shop...ball joints are a pain if you have to chisel off the original ones...better have an air-hammer. New ones should bolt up, making future swaps a little easier.

thanks for the advice everyone, still trying to figure things. it kinda boggles my mind that the idler arm i just had replaced not even 6 month ago would be bad. yeah, i'm just going to have someone do the ball joint for me. everything else i can do in a few hard working hours.

hay buddy I live in VA also and know how much of a pita they can be(at least we don't have emissions testing) but I found that if you go to someone who doesn't have a lot to gain, like your local oil change place who could not do the repairs if they failed you on them, tend to be allot more honest on whats wrong.
