State inspection
you can jack the car up and grab the tire and move it side to side and up and down and see if theres any excessive play. also have the truck running and tires on the ground and have someone move the steering wheel back and forth and check out the steering, you will see if the idler arm is bad.
if your mechanically inclined just replace all this crap yourself. the wheel bearing is pretty easy except for that big socket (which costs $25) then its 3 bolts on the back. im glad we dont have state inspections here. idler arm is two bolts. the lower ball joint might be a bit of work, but i have never done one on a s10 yet

thanks for the advice everyone, still trying to figure things. it kinda boggles my mind that the idler arm i just had replaced not even 6 month ago would be bad. yeah, i'm just going to have someone do the ball joint for me. everything else i can do in a few hard working hours.
hay buddy I live in VA also and know how much of a pita they can be(at least we don't have emissions testing
) but I found that if you go to someone who doesn't have a lot to gain, like your local oil change place who could not do the repairs if they failed you on them, tend to be allot more honest on whats wrong.
