Default Steering noise, I think.

Hi there. New to the Forum. New to DIY and am looking at fixing up my 2000 4x4 Blazer.

My first concern is the noise coming from what I believe to be the steering. Where and what unit that is causing it, I have no idea. All I do know is that when I turn there is a constant 'moan' sound. It is not a high pitch noise and there is no tire wear.

I am thinking it may be the power steering pump on its last legs. Any chance it may be something else with regards to steering? Wheel bearings or joints?

Thanks in advance.

Ian

Kind of a stupid question, but is the power steering reservoir full? How does the fluid look? Have you tried flushing the system out?

A moan when steering is indicative of a power steering pump issue.

if it sounds like a rubbing noise while driving and turning then its most likley a wheel bearing but if your turning the wheels while the car is parked and it makes a "maon" sound its power steering related, like kyle said, check the fluid level and its condition.

Thanks, I will look into the fluid level. But after putting up this post I took it for a drive to listen at all stages of driving. Parked, the wheels turn fine with no noticeable 'moan' or 'wearing' sound. However, the faster I get and slight turn the wheel, say when changing lanes on the highway, the sound is very noticeable.

What is involved in getting the bearings fixed and a cost guesstimit?

Thanks again.

Doesn't sound like a pump problem then. Definitely sounds like wheel bearings.
