Default Steering wander

Hello All,

My Blazer is starting to wander and showing excessive play in the steering. I also noticed recently with the cold weather upon us that when I attempt to steer first part of the morning it seemed hesitant making it difficult to turn.

I've replaced ball joints, idler assembly, and pitman. I haven't checked the rag joint yet. I'll check on it next time I get underneath.

Would this be the pump or steering gear?

Thanks, T

Rags can wear and get loose. There's a steering shaft mod that includes a universal joint installation, (Jeep intermediate shaft). Pumps on these things are pretty solid. The gear box, on the other hand, likes to wear teeth on the sector shaft and it gets sloppy. Preload can be adjusted, but the gear box MUST be totally removed to properly adjust it, and adjustment is usually futile. Better off installing a remanufactured gear box.

I'll have to look into that U joint conversion. I'll be already there having to take the steering gear out. Might as well right?

That would make sense, but you don't have to remove the gear box to do the steering shaft upgrade.
