Stuck key in 91 Blazer

The ignition key is stuck in the run position. Had to pull the coil wire and disconnect the battery to stop the vehicle. I suspect it's linked to the gear shift (column mounted) not getting to Park. However, I've disconnected the linkage at the transmission, and jammed it back to Park as hard as possible.
Also, pulled the steering wheel off, but i can't release the lock by pushing in the little silver button. took the switch off the bottom end of the steering column, but that seems to be working correctly.
I'm pretty sure it's a mechanical problem because the key switch seems to hit such a solid stop when I try to turn it back.
