it kinda looks like the plug for the 4x4 indicator light. wonder if its even important. did you find where it plugs in on the trans or is that what your looking for?

actually upon looking at it again thats what it looks like. the second picture looks like the light bulb that lights up the shifter to let you know what gear you are in. probably dont have to worry about it

Yes, you are right. The black wire does go to the shift indicator light, however it passes through to the two pole pug that plugs into the side of the trans. There is a white wire coming out of that two pole as well but does not go back to the light assembly and that is what I'm thinking about. What is it looking for there? I'm pretty sure that black is a ground for the light as black is a standard coloring for ground wires. Is the white one simply +12V? That would be an easy hook up. However, after you talking about the lock up, I am worried I might burn this thing up if I don't get it right and get the OD lock up working correctly. This is the only plug I can find on this trans, and after all I've seen I still cant even tell what this plug does, or if it has anything to do with the lock up. Maybe I'm just dense or just overlooking something. Maybe I'm over-thinking this and it's just 12V and a ground too...

I thought those went to the transfercase. Anyways all thr 700r4 transmissions I seen has a 4 **** electrical conector on the side of it can't recall what side its been a while. Got a picture of the transpan?

Yes, there is the two pole I have been talking about on the passenger side of the trans, and there is a square 4 pole on the drivers side. I'll get the pics up after work tonight.

Also, I had a friend stop by and he thinks I might need the steering column out of the other truck due to the 700R4 having the extra gear my column shifter does not have the extra position for it. ?? I had not seen anything that said I needed that or even referred to it. Is this something I have to swap as well? The only thing I saw that even came close was reading about some guys modifying the trans to have the lock up work off a toggle switch so they could control it better.

You don't really NEED a different column. Just the gears might not line up right on the indicator dial. I've done the swap the other way around and the column worked just when u put it in 1st it said you were in 2nd. If you have emissions or inspection they might complain about it

Ok, I've done some searching and found that the square four pole plug on the drivers side is the plug for the lock-up. However, my '79 does not have anything wired for that. Also, I do not have the plug itself as it was not provided from the donor truck. I'm sure the plug is easy enough to get from a parts store, but even so I would be at a loss to where to hook up the leads as all I see on the 'net is some rough wiring ideas for inside the pan. I guess the question is, when I pick up the plug where/to what should I splice the wires? What type of inputs are these?

I'm starting to think I'm having to rebuild my whole damn '79 into an '86 because of a silly transmission! Ug!

I have also included pics of these as you requested.

Thanks.

yep thats a 700r4 i wonder if that two prong plug is for the reverse lights.... well your on your own for hooking up that lock out device ive never put a 700r4 in my truck ive just taken them out of numerous vehicles for other transmissions . theres also something that bolts to the firewall for the lock out, should be on the upper passenger side with a vacuum line going to it. im not really sure of everything you need they might sell complete kits. ive actually seen them in a old el camino someone put a 700r4 in that previously had a th350.

sorry wish i knew more to help you out. i would think you could still drive the truck without hooking it up just dont use over drive

Thanks for your help on this. I know it can be done because I've read about folks that have done it. They just don't go into detail about how. I'm sure someone on here might have some guidance that has run into this before. I can drive it I guess, but I'm not wanting to ruin it or not use the OD as that is the whole purpous of installing it in the first place. Maybe I'll end up driving it to a trans shop. lol. I'd just really hate to do something like that as I'm a full supporter of doing things yourself. I mean, we're just down to connecting wires at this point. lol.

The vacuum line I beleive you are speaking of is for a VSS (vehicle speed sensor). It is for trucks equiped with electronic dashes. That is what I've read so far anyway. Not used in my application.
