Default Ticking noise from rear end

I searched through the forum and found nothing too comprehensive.

I got on my truck today and heard a ticking noise from my rear end. It didnt shake or seem to cause problems. It seems to have gotten better but it still ticks a little. It doesnt make noise untill I really mash the petal. Also there is some oil on my rear pumpkin. Does anyone know anything about this or have had this problem before. Possibly just low on diff fluid?

Can you tell if its fresh oil leaking? If so, you prbably gotta replace the gasket or o-ring. If not, your pumpkin has a plug half way up the back of it. Pull that plug off and look in. You should have fluid up to that plug. If not, get more fluid. I reccomend fully draining the pumpkin before refilling it. It's not good to mix old and new oil. Plus, you don't know whats in there and you don't want to mix viscosities. After refilling it, clean it and monitor for new leaks.

Not sure about the squeak. Those are hard to diagnose online.

It seems to be a fresh oil leak. Its not squeakings, it sounds like when kids put cards in their bike tires about that loud but not very rapid, 2 ticks per second or so. How bad is it to just fill up on oil, not really convient for me to drain all of it.

Can you clarify where it's leaking from on the diff exactly? There's about 4 spots each with it's own diagnosis.

So it only does this when you get hard on the gas?

If its only an inch or two, you should be ok but anymore than that and its purely your call.

I havnt seen it leak out, only on the bottom of the pumpkin. It only does it when i really get on the gas, and i think that it is starting to stop making the noise. The oil is on the bottom of the pumpkin and about 3-5 inches twoards the drive shaft.

Does it look like it's coming from your driveshaft seal? You probably have
1. A bad driveshaft support which is letting your driveshaft shake...which inturn is tearing up your diff input seal. They can tear up your tranny too though, so I'd check that out. If you can shake your driveshaft pretty good by hand, thats your culprit. Or....

2, A gear in your diff is missing a tooth or two. I'm not sure about this one though since you said its going away. But then again the same could be said about your driveshaft support.

If it's not coming from the seal, you could still have one of those issues and someone just didn't tighten the drain plug enough.

lmao the i did have a rock in my tire =) i wish that was the problem. The leak seems to be origanating from pumpkin, and my drive shaft is not lose. Im going to check it out tommorow morning and see if its still doing it. I had drove in reverse for a block or so but im unsure if that could of effected it for a short time.
