Transfer case whirring noise...?

Transfer case whirring noise...?
Hello,
1999 Blazer, V6
I helped my father de-engage his 4 wheel drive last year by taking the battery out and pulling cable back. Determined that the cable was shot and rusty. My father did not want to replace the cable at that time and thought he would be replacing the blazer... Told him do not engage 4 wheel drive because you may not be able to get it out again...
Well, he still has blazer and he put it in 4 wheel drive. He drove back from NY about 300 miles and about 1/4 way into trip he heard whirring noise. He stopped at mechanics and they filled up transfer case and he said that helped for a while. Then another 100 miles, same noise. Saw another mechanic they thought transfer case shot?
He made it home and now he wants to fix whatever the whirrring is. Says its not noisy under a load, but when he lets off gas it whirrs. I'm guessing it tried to pull cable out of 4wd and could not do it all of the way...?
Have not seen truck yet... I'm assuming the worst and transfer case is shot? Could transfer case still be ok? Can they be rebuilt? Should I be heading toward a salvage yard or do the sell remanufactured ones?
Any advice welcome.
