Universal joint removal 97'
97' Blazer 4X4 145K Miles. How do you remove the u-joints from the main drive shaft? Are they pinned in some how?Looks like there is plastic pins in the front one and plastic pin and bolted in the rear. Have play in the rear one and want to replace both right away. Thanks.

You have to heat them up with a torch and melt theplastic out of them. It will squirt out like a worm.

Thanks for that info. So......I think I will just replace the rear U-joint. That has the play in it.Just remove the 4 bolts, heat up the u-joint until the plastic oozz's out, then pop the u-joint off the yoke with a pry bar, and the same for thedrive shaft end, correct?I don't have to remove the drive shaft do I? Also, I don't need to use a press to getthe new one on do I? Should be able to tap it on?And also, I want to get a u-joint from Advance auto.com, they have mutiple different ones, 1.188,1.125 bearing O.D.,as well as different bolt lengths to use with the u-joint, .75, 1.31. What should I be looking for. Thanks for the help.

The new one will tap in, you dont need a press. Get the napa off road u-joint or spicer heavy duty, dont buy advance orautozone crap

Will a regular propane torch get hot enough to melt the plastic out?
Also, should I remove the drive shaft or can I leave it in? Thanks.

You will be there for awhile, but it should bring the temp up enough to flow the nylon.
