I have a 96 blazer, I'm trying to figure out what's the best way to remove the front differential without pulling out my hair?

 

What do you mean by "front rear"? kinda canceling each-other out there.

Sorry bout that I mean the front differential 96 blazer

 

Its a fun job and the entire front end will have to be disassembled. I attached a pdf of the instructions. I did it and i removed the entire steering linkage in front and it gave a bit more room. I would suggest replacing any front end parts that are bad as you will have it all disassembled and now is the time.

Not trying to hi-jack here trying to learn... can the axles be removed safely without the puller that is called out or should we get one? Do we also need a tie-rod end puller specific to this vehicle or will a generic tool from Autozone or the like get it done?

this is my 16 yr olds 1st vehicle and we know we need front-end parts as well as possibly a diff and want to make sure we are prepared before we occupy the garage and tear it down...

We tore into the front-end on my sons 2000 Blazer / Trailblazer and found nothing but POOR repair work... Stub axle nuts not torqued (loose), spindle to outer bearing flange bolts loose (dust shield was rattling it was so loose), tie-rod ends loose, upper ball-joints not torqued (loose). it is no wonder this truck ate a pair of what appeared to be relatively new front tires... next Sat we will pull the diff and inspect. Looks like we will need tie-rods, and possibly a diff for sure, but will need to inspect CV's, and all bearings...

 

I pulled my cv using a pry bar. And i used a wedge fork generic one to remove the joint fittings as i was replacing all my front end parts anyway.
