I was trying to remove the tires from a 1996 blazer headed to the junkyard, and put them on my 1999 blazer. The rear tires came off, no problem. But the front tires have some sort of wheel lock mechanism. There was a pin holding on some sort of metal ring which i removed. Under that was a huge (1 1/2"-2") bolt in the center of the wheel, which appears to be holding the tires on. All of the lug nuts were properly removed. The back tires needed a little "persuading" with a small sledge hammer but the fronts won't budge. What is this bolt and how the hell do i get it off? Do i even need to get it off or am i missing something?

that big nut is holding the brake rotor to the spindle, or if its a 4x4 its holding the axle in.
if all the lug nuts are off the wheel should come off.
if all the lug nuts are off the wheel should come off.

IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THE WHEEL WAS PUT ON INCORRECTLY THE LAST TIME THE TIRES WERE CHANGED. IT APPEARS THAT THE BOLT IS HOLDING THE WHEEL ON, THE BEST WAY I CAN PUT IT, IS IT JUST LOOKS THAT IT IS HOLDING THE WHEEL ON WHEN I LOOK AT IT. AND I SMACKED THE CRAP OUT OF IT WITH A SMALL SLEDGE AND IT JUST LAUGHED AT ME. HAHA. SORRY IF I SOUND STUPID, I JUST DONT KNOW JACK ABOUT CARS. NOW, IF IT WAS A BIKE, I COULD TAKE IT APART AND PUT IT BACK TOGETHER NO PROBLEM. CARS THOUGH, NOT SO GOOD. THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY packofqtips, I APPRECIATE IT BROTHER.

It sounds like the front wheels have rusted themselves to the rim.. Use some penetrating oil and let them set for a bit. Then use your hammer and they should come off. If you removed the big nut on the axle put it back on. It should now come off. I had the same problem on my 94 Sonoma. I thought they would never come off. It took some persuading with a large hammer to move them. When I got them off you could see the rust on the hubs. I used some sandpaper to get rid of the rust and now they come off easily.
Hope this helps
