2000 4x4x4 trouble diagnosis
Hello,
I have a 2000 4x4x4 and I'm having some issues with the 4-wheel. The vehicle has 75,000 miles on it, and it has been taken very well care of.
When driving down the road, Ill sometimes look at the 4x4 electronic button control panel and I will see the 4-Lo light flashing, as if someone pressed the switch. Obviously it won't engage because I'm not in nuetral and don't meet the speed recquirements. It also sometimes does this when I first turn the car on. If Im backing out of the driveway while it does this, I pass through the Nuetral gear and then it will engage. When this happens, I often have to push the 2-Hi button a few times to get it to go back to 2-Hi. Recently while driving down the highway it started to sometimes engage the Auto-4x4 mode even though no button was pressed.
I went to the dealer and bought a new electronic control panel, thinking that the PCB behind it may have become cracked due to pushing the buttons over the years. No avail, same problem.
At times, the control panel will become unresponsive, but If I just drive it for a little bit it will become responsive again. Also, at random times driving down the highway, the Service 4x4 light will come on, but its non-volatile and resets every time I shut the ignition off.
I don't think its a mechanical (Vacum issue), and I'm pretty sure its Electrical, as it seems to have something to do with signal sensing and/or false triggering. With that said, Im left with the Encoder motor and the TCCM. I'm hoping that maybe its a loose plug at the Encoder motor, but Im not really sure where that is located. Does anyone have any suggestions.
Also, do any of you think its possible for the vehicle to be engaged in say maybe 4-Hi even though the control panel displays 2-Hi. I know its bad to drive in 4-Hi on dry pavement, and I don't want to do further damage.

Well I would suggest having the DTC's read to see if the computer has any stored codes. If this is electrical the computer may be helpful in finding out the problem.

If there is a stored code, doesnt that mean the 4x4 service light would stay on constantly (Volatile memory) ??
What is triggering my problems appears to be Non-volatile, as every time I turn off the ignition and restart the car, the 4x4 service light isn't on. It only comes on at random intervals. Yesterday I drove 36 miles, and it didnt come on. Today I drove 1 mile and during that trip it did.
