Default 1994 Blazer Dying While Driving and Not Starting...

Immediate symptoms:
Died multiple times after starting; whining sound coming from rear(ish) of vehicle just before dying and continuing after dying for a few seconds. There was about 3/5 of a tank, per the gauge (I just put $40 in yesterday, so I know there is gas in it). Eventually did start and got home without incident.

Possible very recent related symptoms:
Died twice today while driving--once on a bumpy dirt road @ about 25mph and once on a paved road @ about 40mph. No whining noted at those times.

Unusual circumstances:
Drove 15-20 miles today on a rutted and rocky dirt road; never done that kind of driving in this vehicle before. (Bought (very) used about 6 months ago.)

Other possible related symptoms:
Vehicle has died twice at about 1/4 tank (per gauge) and not started until more gas was put in.
Vehicle has died maybe three times while trying to back out of a parking spot after just being started. Each time took multiple starts to get moving again.

Fuel pump? Contaminants in the gas tank?

And how hard is it to pull the pump or the tank in this?

Thanks in advance!

check fuel pressure. souds like you got a bad pump. but there is a rubber line that comes from the pump up to the metal sending unit in the tank that gets a hole in it somethimes. its not that hard to drop the tank. just take the dust cover down. take the 4 bolts off the straps but have a jack under it. lower it down a bit and undo the lines at the pump with i think a 9/16 wrench. then there is a metal grounding strap on the harnes you have to remove with a small wrench behind the rear bumper. not that hard. try to siphon as much gas out you can first. but before you do anything put a test guage on it and let us know what the pressure is. while the guage is hooked up put it on the windsheild and close the hood and drive around untill it dies. whats the pressure then??

also is it the vortec or tbi.

also my buddy had a 91 1500 with a 5.7l v8 and it was dieing all the time like you said and found out it was the ignition control modual on the distributer. so check fuel pressure first.
