$500 94 Jimmy 4x4.... tune up questions
Official forum introduction...
Picked up a 94 Jimmy(CPI) with 212K miles a few months ago that supposedly had a bad transmission. I took it for a test drive and immediately noticed that it was in 4wd, and that the 2hi/4lo switches lettering had faded away completely. I assumed that the owner of the tow yard either had no idea that it was a 4wd truck, or he just didn't know how to get it out of 4wd. Purchased the truck for $500, drove around the corner, put it in 2HI, and proceeded to drive home without issue. Got it home and did an oil change, drained/refilled trans & replaced the trans filter.
After driving the truck for a while I've noticed that it has a miss at idle, and occasionally stalls when coming to a stop. This has happened 4-5 times in the past 3 weeks. It also seems to be down on power. The previous owner kept up maintenance(has past 5 years maintenance documentation), but I noticed that there is a great deal of oil built up on the valve covers, and the wires to the EGR valve have been cut rendering it inoperable(records show that EGR valve has been replaced and/or cleaned several times). As far as I can tell, everything else is good.
Basically, I'm just trying to find out if there are any additional tune up considerations with this truck that I should take care of aside from your typical plugs/cap/wires/fuel filter, etc... Other than the bogus EGR, is there anything else with these trucks that might as well replace while doing a tune up(intake man. gasket, cpi unit, anything?) .

Do the repair doc's indicate if the CPI or Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR) have been replaced recently? Fuel pressure regulator is a known issue with these's trucks. Everyone thinks its the CPI Unit "Spyder" that goes bad but its usually just the FPR thats attached to the Spyder, that goes bad.
Nice score on the truck, cant beat that $500.00 deal.

cat conv has always been an issue with older vehichles mine literally boged down and no power to speack of now i just replace em just to get it out of the way. if you can do clean up the egr and get it hooked back up it plays an important role in the computer system and performance. like 94 said proper fuel presure is a must. other than that standard routine maintinance is a good idea.
Yeah I forgot about that injector harness. The rubber gasket in that thing goes to mush from the fuel.
Another thing that sometimes go are the pump and sending unit. But you said you have repair records, check to see if that has been replaced.
Also when you repair/replace the EGR, get the EGR gasket with the screen. Cuts down on the amount of carbon from entering and clogging up the EGR.
