1990 4.3L Temp Gauge and Misc Tube
Hey all,
I just recently picked up an S10 Blazer and inherited quite a project with it. I'm working on getting everything road worthy, but I'm concerned about the temp and ensuring I dont overheat.
So I have the following issues.
1. My temp gauge doesnt work. So I checked on the passenger side of the motor and found the coolant temp sender. It did not have anything connected to it. I heard that this wire was green and happened to find a green wire zip tied in a different spot not connected to anything. It is only a small connector on it though with no way to actually connect it to the sensor. I can't seem to find the right part number for this. Any help on this?
2. After going over the engine bay and pulling the intake stuff out, I realized that the tube going from below the intake to the driver's side valve cover didnt actually connect to the cover. It just sat with the opening under the tube touching. What is this part called and should it have a second piece or is it broken? It looks like the PCV valve is on the passenger side, so i wasnt sure what this was.
Thanks for everyones help in advance. I hope to have a real intro post up soon. I just need to get this stuff fixed before inspection, I already had to fix lights, windows not rolling down, horn etc. So much for being "inspection ready no problem."
Also, any suggestions on what to cover when I go to clean this thing with a pressure washer would be great.
quick pic of the beast before I got it.

The green wire is for the dash gauge. You can confirm this by grounding the wire and the dash gauge should peg high or low ( I do not remember if ground is low or high). The ECU temperature sending unit is at the front of the intake manifold and you need a scan tool to read ECU temps. The driver side tube connects to the valve cover and the spacer for the TBI. The end of the tube breaks easily. If you need a new temp sensor for the dash gauge make sure you get the sending unit for a gauge and not an idiot light. The green wire can easily rub against the exhaust manifold and get burned. I replaced the connector for my dash gauge sending unit on my 89 from a 91 due to the connector being a better plug and than got a sending unit for a 91. (I got the plug from a junkyard and spliced it into my wire harness)

Oh whoops I thought I mentioned that I did in fact ground it. It did peg it to max, so the gauge and wire is good. I just need to get the connector I assume.
As far as the tube goes, would it just be called a breather tube?
Thanks for your help!

I was gonna buy a new one, but since I'm heading to the junkyard anyways, I'll just grab one. Now to find a list of vehicles with that non vortec 4.3l...
Whats the socket sze on that gauge sender? I tried to pull mine off yesterday, but the biggest socket I have is a 19mm (and the standard equivalent).
I assumed the truck is standard sized bolts and such, but my metric are the only ones that have worked so far...
