1st gen front hub nut torque spec
Can someone clear up what the torque spec is for the front hub nut? The big 36mm one. The chilton says 174 ft/lbs in one spot. And another spot it says tighten to 12 ft/lbs the loosen and hand tighten and install cotter pin. 174 seems like way too much. Help?

174ft-lbs would be for the 4wd trucks, but I seem to recall it officially being 180ft-lbs. It is lower on the 98+ trucks (and 97 trucks with integrated ABS sensors in the hubs) at 103ft-lbs.
12ft-lbs is to set the bearings on a 2wd front spindle.
