4x4 Question

4x4 Question
Ok, I hate to be the millionth person on this forum to ask push button 4x4 questions but I want to be sure of something before I proceed with replacing parts.
My truck goes into 4x4 low sometimes on the first try and sometimes it takes more than one try. It does not go into 4x4 hi at all. If you press the 4x4 hi button in gear or park it does nothing. If you press it in netural, both it and the 4x4 low button light go on and the truck goes into low. Actually, whether you press 4hi or 4low, both lights come on.
I reset the system as described in "4wd no worky" and it continued to do the same exact thing. I jumped terminals "a" and "j" which gave me two blinks indicating encoder motor. I disconnected the battery and cleaned the connections to no avail. I am assuming that my encoder is bad and I am going to try and find a replacement.
I am sure that the 4wd low is engaging because I spun both my front and rear wheels in the snow today while moving the truck around my property. Please let me know if it is the encoder motor or if I should try something else. Also, where is a good place to get a new one? I don't trust used crap most of the time. Does anybody have pictures of the encoder motor and its removal? Thanks.

Sounds like you have identified the faulty component. My bet would be on the encoder motor as well.
You could check out the thread by error_401 in the Tech Article (DIY) section for further information on the encoder motor if you wanted.

94 leak at encoder motor
pulled off my encoder motor and trans fluid leaked out.is there a seal between it and transfer case and if so is it hard to change. Thanks

How much fluid came out? There should be a seal on the sector shaft where it passes through the case.
Just for s&g's, pull the fill plug on the back of the transfer case to see if there is an over full condition.
