Default 89 s10 Frontend 4x4 noise engaged

Basicly when im in 4x4 i hear a noise coming from the frontend area,,( axle/Floor ?? ) When i let off gas,it goes away for a second, til throttle is completely backed off, then starts again.Same as stepping on gas..I was told you cant drain the front axle to change oil,,but it does unbolt right..( a cover of some sort ) What kinda of gear oil would be the best to replace?? And is it the gears grinding?? ( the noise )

Thanks

The noise is likely caused by the front axle engagement cable getting hung up or a problem with the the vacuum supply to the front axle engagement actuator.

As far as how to change the front diff lube, some of them required the old fluid to be sucked out of the fill port while others had a drain plug. You have to determine what you have. Then 80w90 GL-5 gear lube or the synthetic 75w90 is what you put back in.
